Born in 1843, Fildes gained recognition for his realistic and emotive depictions of social issues, particularly in the context of Victorian society. It is a reprint of the first edition. With the illustrations, and an introduction, biographical and bibliographical by Charles Dickens the younger. There are also top-edge gilt pages, a facsimile of the title-page from the original edition, a facsimile of the wrapper to the original edition, and a ribbon inside (now loose), which would have been intended as a bookmark. This is a neat and clean copy of this book. Please see further details in the description below. Published by Macmillan and Co., Limited, St. Martin’s Street, London and printed in Great Britain by R. & R. Clark, Limited, Edinburgh. It was first printed by Macmillan & Co., in 1923 and this is a 1925 reprint. It is part of the series “The Works of Charles Dickens”. There is no dust jacket. The blue limp leather-bound cover has beautiful gilt stamp lettering and decorations on the spine and embossed borders on the boards. The boards and spine are intact and robust, and in a good condition for nearly 100 years old. There is only light wear, including soft bumping to the corners, light rubbing at the edges, small or light marks, light scratches, very small splits in the leather at the top of the spine, and a gentle lean to the spine. Please refer to the photographs for further details. Inside, the pages are only very lightly tanned, with light patches of tanning on the half title page. The pages are in an overall very neat and clean state for their age, and predominantly uncreased. There is just the very occasional small mark, which does not affect the text, and only light or small creases on a few pages. Most of the pages are without rips, and there is just an extremely small rip at the edge of page 60 and overleaf, which does not affect the text (see the photo of page 60). On the back free endpaper there is a very small ink stamp (see photo). However, there are no further pen or pencil marks written inside this book. Between just a few pages there are very light cracks in the gutter, although all the pages are secure. There are no loose or missing pages. All 229 pages are present, plus the publisher’s book catalogue at the rear. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description.
