Illustrated paper covered front board exhibits water or tea dampness staining. Front hinge beginning to split at tail. Boards are scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine scuffed & chipped. Previous ownership bookplate found on front paste-down: Maurice Robert des Marais. Small piece of clear tape found on fore-edge of front end-page (verso) to repair a small tear. Normal age-related toning throughout text-block; mostly to edges of leaves. Cost sheet found tipped-in on rear paste-down (unsure if this was publisher's choice or previous owners). Binding intact. Please see photos. Frederick H. Gowing (1860-1941) was born in Chester, Vermont, Frederick Gowing was a carpenter engaged in the architectural business in Fitchburg, Massachusetts until he moved to Boston where he was engaged as an architect for 40 years. He drew plans for the construction of buildings in various sections of New England and during the World War he was an inspector of airplanes for the government.
