Description: This version is considered an "Early Printing" with one feature that distinguishes it from the First Printing. This feature is that type at two locations is "broken" while in the First Printing it was "not broken". The broken text is the page number on page 171, and the last word, next to last line, on page 189. Both of these are shown in the listing photo. Other features that characterize a First Printing and this Early Printing include: 12 color plates that are coated on printed side only, Reilly & Lee large type on spine, 4 advertisements after book ends. The book is in GOOD CONDITION, with the main wear issue being with the boards. Corners and top/bottom of spine heavily worn, moderate to heavy edge wear. There are previous owner markings on the cover paste-on, which otherwise shows some wear and slight soiling. There is darkening of color on the spine with a bit of cloth rub-off (see listing photo). The cracks at the front and rear endpapers solidified with bookbinding tape. There is a bookstore stamp back endpaper. There is a previous owner scribbling on one page - the "book belongs to.." page, but no other markings found in careful flip through. Pages are very solidly bound and clean; a few of the color plates do have a little soiling on top of the plate - this is seen on the plates of the listing photos. 271 pages followed by 4 leaves of ads, but ads only on one side of the leaf (blank on back), so only 4 pages of advertising. 12 BEAUTIFUL COLOR PLATES BY JOHN R. NEILL, several within text B&W illustrations. The first 14 Oz books were authored by Frank L. Baum. The estate authorized further books in the series. The next four were authored by Ruth Plumly Thompson, this one being the 4th. Thompson's tale carries on the tradition: A princess. A prince. An old soldier, a wise man, and a prophet. A chicken and a pirate! Cliff's Books B88
