1923 W572 Baseball - John Collins, Boston Red Sox - PSA 2

Description: 1923 W572 Baseball - John Collins, Boston Red Sox - PSA 2 On the Player - John Francis “Shano” Collins (1885-1955) was an MLB right fielder and first baseman who played for the Chicago White Sox (1910–1920) and Boston Red Sox (1921–1925). A member of the 1917 World Series champion White Sox, Collins was known for his versatility, reliable hitting, and sharp fielding skills. Over 16 seasons and 1,799 games, he posted a slash line of .264/.306/.364, amassing an 11.2 WAR. Notably, Collins still holds the MLB record for hitting eight triples with the bases loaded. During the infamous 1919 World Series, marred by the Black Sox Scandal, Collins went 4-for-16 at the plate. Despite being on the team, he was never implicated in the scandal. In fact, in the legal proceedings, Collins was identified as one of the wronged parties; the indictment stated that the conspirators’ actions had effectively defrauded him of $1,784 in potential World Series earnings. After retiring from playing in 1925, Collins remained involved in baseball, including coaching and scouting roles. On the Card - PSA has only graded 6 W572 John Collins cards, with this PSA 2 being the second highest graded example. On the Set - The 1923 W572 hand-cut baseball card set consists of 121 cards, generally measuring around 1-5/16" by 2-1/2", although card sizes may vary due to their hand-cut nature. Each card features a white border, a centered player portrait, a facsimile signature, and a blank back. Below the signature, the player’s team name is printed. The cards come in both black-and-white and sepia tones and were originally issued in strips of 10, highlighting notable baseball players and boxers of the era. This set closely mirrors the 1922 E120 American Caramel set, using the same player images, except for Ty Cobb. The cards are unnumbered, with a copyright symbol and an alphabetical code at the bottom right indicating the photo source. For example, codes “IFS,” “cIFS,” and “IFC” identify International Feature Service as the copyright holder.
