1921 The National Rip-Saw Socialist Magazine Eugene Debs Issue Antique Original

Description: This is a vintage original issue of The National Rip-Saw which was a socialist political periodical published in St. Louis, Missouri with a motto printed on the masthead that reads “Blind As A Bat To Everything But Right”. This issue No. 13 dated November 1921. This issue is noteworthy since it is entirely devoted to Eugene Debs and his wife Katherine Mietzel Debs. The front cover has a photographic portrait of Mrs. Debs and reads “The entire issue is devoted to the story of the life and work of Katherine and Eugene V. Debs written by Kate Richards O’Hare”. Like Eugene Debs, Kate Richards O’Hare was also imprisoned during WWI for socialist political activism that the federal government charged as seditious against the United States. Kate Richards O’Hare and her husband Frank O’Hare founded the National Rip-Saw magazine with Kate working as editor and Frank working as general manager. This issue is 16 pages measuring about 13.5” x 10.25”. This issue dated November 1921 comes a year after Debs fourth and final campaign for President of the United States in which he received about 900,000 votes, the most ever obtained by any Socialist Party candidate in the United States. The feat was even more remarkable considering that Debs was imprisoned for violating the 1918 Sedition Act against the United States during the 1920 campaign. President Warren G. Harding pardoned Debs in December 1921, a month after this magazine was published. This antique original and scarce magazine has a few small areas with mousing on the tips of the upper and lower corners on the right side not affecting the text, and some toning from age and light handling wear.
