1920s COLUMBIA Costume & FLAG of NATIONS Card PIONEER Bread D58 lk R52 Gum

Description: This card was issued by the PIONEER BAKING CO, of Paterson New Jersey. One was wrapped with their brand of Pullman Bread . Although this particular brand is not mentioned it does use the same images as series D58 in Burdick’s American Card Catalogue. I have not been able to find a date of issue in any guide that I am aware of but I speculate the series to have been issued some time during the 1920’s. The front of the card features an illustration of a man or woman wearing the tradition costume of the Nation holding a flag of the Nation. Interestingly the image used is similar to that used by the Baltimore Chewing Gum co on there R52 series, with the exception that this D58 series uses a full length image, while the R52 Gum issue uses only the head and shoulders for their smaller size card. The back provides information about the featured country as well as advertising. This card features The Flag of COLUMBIA . The Card measures 5 7/16 inches by 3 3/16 inches approximately. The card does have some areas of discoloration, one edge is factory rough cut. I have scanned the front and back of the card fairly large so you can determine the condition for yourself . This is a scarce series. Bread cards are one of the last properly catalogued frontiers of card collecting. With such fantastic and well known illustrators doing the art work, diversity of series, and the fact that they are scarce with many of the issues being regional issues only, with very low print runs, bread cards are a great collectable that are bound to increase in popularity as time goes on.
