Pope John Paul II (born Karol Józef Wojtyła on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland; died April 2, 2005, in Vatican City) was the 264th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, serving from October 16, 1978, until his death. He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years and one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. Karol Wojtyła was ordained a priest in 1946 after studying in a clandestine seminary during World War II. He earned a doctorate in theology and quickly rose through the ranks of the Church, becoming the Archbishop of Kraków in 1964 and a cardinal in 1967. Wojtyła was a prominent voice in the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), contributing to discussions on religious freedom and the role of the Church in the modern world. Elected pope in 1978, John Paul II was known for his charismatic leadership and extensive travels, visiting 129 countries during his papacy. He played a significant role in the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, particularly in his native Poland, where his support for the Solidarity movement was crucial. John Paul II was also a vigorous defender of traditional Catholic doctrine, opposing abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty while promoting the sanctity of marriage and the family. He emphasized interfaith dialogue, particularly with Judaism and Islam, and was the first pope to visit a synagogue and a mosque. Despite surviving an assassination attempt in 1981, John Paul II continued his global mission, addressing social justice issues, advocating for human rights, and calling for peace. His extensive writings include 14 encyclicals and numerous books, shaping contemporary Catholic thought. Canonized in 2014, Pope John Paul II's legacy endures through his contributions to the Church and his impact on global politics, interfaith relations, and the promotion of human dignity.
