RARE FIRST 1917 PRINTING!!! OVER 100 YEARS OLD -- IMAGINE! Johnny Gruelle began his professional story telling and illustrating career with Mr. Twee Deedle in 1911. It wasn't long before his genius was recognized, and in 1914 he commissioned by Cupples & Leon to illustrate his first Book -- "Grimm's Fairy Tales". After a series of works for them in their small format "All About..." series of Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales, Johnny produced and had published this Gem of a Fairy Tale Title, His FIRST VOLLAND BOOK - the year before RAGGEDY ANN, his First Rag Doll Book Title - but not his First Rag Doll Character!! From the FIRST STORY of UNCLE CLEM Told in this book (& shown being tossed in the air by a dog), the seeds for a Rag Doll Series was already germinating -- I think he might have had enough of fairies and nursery rhymes for a while!! The book is in VERY GOOD Condition, some slight edge and tip wear and bottom 1/3 of spine cover has sluffing (shown in last image)...binder in-tact and strong, hinges perfect, only mark is faint 1918 inscription on top of half-title page. Rear advertising page lists only the Nature Children series, with 5 other titles, but not this one...indicating First Printing as well as no other printing/edition number under 1917 copyright. NOTE: DO NOT BE FOOLED BY 1928 LATER BRITISH EDITION BEING SUBSTITUTED FOR THIS VERY FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING!!! I give a General Description & list all known defects.
