Description: Old Holder & Old-time Grading1917-D Type 1 Standing Liberty QuarterNGC / CAC AU58By now, you know we like weird....An absolutely amazing coin that must be seen in-hand. An artifact of a bygone era of grading. It used to be that a true AU58 had to be at least an MS63, but with some type of minor rub or friction on the high points. That idea was thrown out long ago, and todays AU58s will have obvious high-point wear and lots of handling, which would preclude them from anything close to choice Mint State. This piece is ostensibly gem uncirculated, and it's beautifully toned, but close scrutiny reveals a long, thin point of friction along Liberty's leg; probably from a slide album or so-called Cabinet Friction. It's essentially a break in the toning. The coin is not circulated; it has booming, glossy luster, full cartwheel, and no handling in the fields. The first thought is to resubmit and try for a choice MS grade, but being a conservative grader, and knowing what an AU58 is supposed to be, I really can't argue that it is technically correct, but very PQ by modern standards. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE CAC, or Certified Acceptance Corporation, green-stickers only coins that are solid or high-end for their assigned PCGS/NGC grades. CAC will gold-sticker PCGS/NGC coins they believe to be under-graded outright. The extra verification provided by CAC confirms that you aren't buying low-end material; and our specialization in high-end coins means that you will continue to see CAC stickers appearing in DM RARE COINS’ inventory!
