Description: Beautiful condition--looks mint--on this pillow silk that was offered as a premium by P. Lorillard as part of its Turkish Trophies Cigarettes premium promotion. They had done a similar one in 1912 that had autographs of theater and stage stars, but by 1914 movie stars emerged and were the new hot thing. This one was advertised to have "Genuine Autographs of 175 Moving Picture Actors and Actresses of international fame." You would send in coupons from the cigarette packs to redeem for different premiums. The frame is wood and is 24" x 23 1/4" and has some age to it but we do not know its actual vintage. The paper backing is aged and is torn in spots. The silk itself is in excellent condition, just some mild scattered age toning. There is one small spot where the silk has bubbled slightly (see photo). Still extremely displayable as is. The piece has an incredible number of names who were the pioneers of the profession--some still known today, such as Mary Pickford (with her husband Owen Moore close by) and Lillian Gish. But most are now long forgotten but who played important roles in the development of the motion picture as a major art form. For instance, there is Augustus Phillips who was Dr. Frankenstein in the 1910 version of FRANKENSTEIN and Mary Fuller who played Elizabeth in the same film. Florence Lawrence was the very first movie star known to the public (until her, the producers kept their real names secret), Henry B. Walthall would soon be featured in BIRTH OF A NATION, which transformed the entire industry. A fabulous piece.
