With twelve colour illustrated plates tipped in from water colours by Edmund J Sullivan. Lavengro is one of Borrow's best known books. He wrote novels and travelogues based on his experiences travelling around Europe. As a genre, Lavengro falls between a memoir and novel. It has been considered a classic of nineteenth century literature and follows the son of an officer who after serving an apprenticeship as a lawyer, becomes a Grub Street Hack. This allows him to observe London low-life. Throughout the novel the unnamed protagonist meets many Romany travellers, of whom he gives memorable and sympathetic pen-portraits. CONDITION In a full morocco binding with gilt stamping to board edges and spine. Binder's stamp in gilt to front pastedown, Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear and handling marks. Spine has faded slightly, as expected with this colour. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the some spots to the endpapers and the odd spot throughout.
