During his life he travelled to America, Japan, Korea, China, and Abyssinia. He was invitied by Queen Victoria to share his tales and drawings from his trips, and subsequently started to publish travel books accompanied with his illustrations. These include 'In the Forbidden Land', 'Tibet and Nepal', and 'The Gems of the East'.'Across the Unknown South America' is about the expedition he made in 1911 to 1912. It's an optimistic look at the continent that he considers to be 'the coming continent of the future'. CONDITION In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, smart. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. A few minor marks to the boards and spines, a little heavier to the spines. Light tide mark to the rear boards. Front hinges are starting but firm, rear hinge of Volume II is a little strained. Stamp of Ward Detwiler to the front paste downs. Dust wrappers are edge worn with chips, heavier to the Volume I dust wrapper, where the front wrap has detached from the back strip, and rear fly leaf had detached from the rear wrap. Chips and loss heavier to Volume I, particularly to the tail of the spine, with smaller chips to the head and tail of the spine of Volume II. Tide mark to the rear wraps, including to the reverse of the wraps, fainter tide mark to the front wrap of Volume II. Backstrips are age-toned. Light rubbing to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Tide mark to the tail of the frontispiece of Volume I, and a fainter tide mark to the following few pages. The tide mark to the bottom edge affects some pages later on in the text block, including a few plates, but only marginally. Fainter tide mark to the bottom edge of Volume II.
