Plus, there is the added bonus of knocking out two players at a time. The 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders Baseball cards were inserted into packages of Mecca Cigarettes. A total of 50 cards and 100 players make up a complete set. While the name Mecca has a Middle Eastern flavor, the brand was part of the American Tobacco Company. The first part of the Twentieth Century marked an increased demand for Turkish tobacco among consumers and the Arabian names were concocted to help spur sales. Many of these names are familiar to collectors, including Fez, Turkey Red, Hassan and Fatima, among others. There are a couple of innovations found on T201 cards that would show up again in future sets. First, the idea of featuring two players on a single card who shared a picture showed up in the 1955 Topps Doubleheaders set. Second, a line of statistics appears on the back. Up to that point, card backs normally included advertisements and little else. 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders Baseball fronts show a lithograph painting of a player in action, with the name and team city printed in the top left corner. On the back, the top half of another player's picture appears. That image can be folded and flipped over onto the legs/torso of the front-image player. The rest of the back shows statistics for both players and an advertisement for Mecca Cigarettes. The cards are unnumbered. Card pairs generally combine teammates. In some cases, both players are Hall of Famers. Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford make up one Hall of Fame combo, as do infielders for the Chicago Cubs in Johnny Evers and Frank Chance. However, the toughest 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders Baseball card features two common players, Patsy Dougherty and Harry Lord of the White Sox. Although folds or creases are normally a negative as far as grading and overall value, 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders Baseball cards are judged with this in mind. Therefore, cards are generally not penalized for creases on the fold points unless there is tearing. However, the overall thinness of the paper used for the cards makes it difficult to find examples in high grade and paper loss can be an issue. Also, soft corners, mis-cuts and centering issues on the card backs cause problems for collectors. This set was "Reprinted" in 1988 by the Card Collectors Company.
