George Hamlin was a student of George Henschel. He made a European tour 1904-5, and sangwith the Chicago Opera Co., 1911-15, but achieved his principal reputation as an oratorio and lieder singer. Hewas known particularly for his advocacy of the songs of Richard Strauss. His daughter Anna Hamlin, a soprano, sang minor roles with the Chicago Grand Opera and later taught voice at Smith College. She subsequently established a very successful vocal studio where her students included Judith Raskin. She also wrote a book ofreminiscences about her father. Hamlin, George, Tenor, * 20.9.1869 Elgin (Illinois), å 20.1.1923 New York; er studierte in seiner amerikanischen Heimat wie auch in Europa, u.a. bei George Henschel in London. Er debntierte 1886 zusammen mit der St. Louis Choral Society in der 2. Sinfonie (+Lobgesang½) von Mendelssohn. 1898 gab er in Chicago einen Liederabend mit Liedern des damals in Amerika noch ganz unbekannten Richard Strauss. In den folgenden Jahren hatte er in den USA bei Musikfesten und Oratorienauffnhrungen viel beachtete Erfolge. 1904-06 unternahm er eine gro¯e Konzerttournee durch Holland, England, Frankreich und Deutschland, die wohl den H÷hepunkt in seiner Karriere bezeichnete. 1911 erfolgte endlich sein Bnhnendebnt, als er an der Oper von Philadelphia den Paul Merrill in der Oper +Natoma½ von Victor Herbert sang. Die gleiche Partie nbernahm er dann auch bei Auffnhrungen in New York und Chicago. Bis 1917 blieb er an der Oper von Chicago engagiert, wo er auch in der dortigen Premiere von +Das Heimchern am Herd½ von Goldmark mitwirkte. Er sang in Chicago den Gennaro in Wolf-Ferraris +I gioielli della Madonna½, den Pinkerton in +Madame Butterfly½ und in den Premieren der Opern +A Lover's Knot½ von Buchhalter (1915), +I dispettosi amanti½ von Attilio Parelli (1915) und +Madeleine½ von Victor Herbert (1917). 1918 gab er in New York nochmals gro¯e Konzerte. Seine Tochter Anna Hamlin hatte um 1930 in Amerika eine kurze, aber erfolgreiche Karriere als Konzertsopranistin. Sie ver÷ffentlichte unter dem Titel +Father was a Tenor½ (Hicksville, NY, 1978) ein Gedenkbuch an ihren Vater.
