Cushman would have been pretty young at the time but had already served maybe 4 terms by then? Cushman was a Republican - from Puget Sound nonetheless - something you really don't see anymore. Evidently the Tacoma man also was normally compared to Lincoln amongst his peers so he probably would have had a bigger future in DC at some point.
