Hardcover, bound in blue cloth titled in gilt on the spine with an armorial device in gilt on the front cover. The top edge is gilt. The covers are bumped & rubbed with a small stain to the bottom of the front cover. 436 deckle-edged pages, illustrated with a frontispiece and 40 photographic plates. The hinges are starting to crack. Very good. First edition, published in a limited edition of 150 copies. RARE. Volume 2 only of a 2 volume set, complete in itself. Includes Amasa Stone Mather's travels to China, Mongolia, Formosa, India, Ceylon, Kenya and Mgunga Serengeti, with a "hunting" appendix at the rear titled "Two Men's Outfit For Three Months Shoot in Africa, and Notes". Amasa Stone Mather (1884-1920) lived but a short life, dying from pneumonia at the age of 35. A well-known big game hunter, he was also a member of the Civic League, the Chamber of Commerce and served on the Republican Executive Committee for Cayahoga County. After his travels, he became connected with the mining department of Pickhand, Mather & Company, becoming a partner in the firm and the manager of its iron ore mining department. A member of the 30th Battery, 10th Battalion at the Field Artillery Central Officers' Training School at Camp Zachary Taylor in Kentucky during the First World War, he applied his expertise in iron mining, iron ore and transportation.
