Edward Bok (life dates 1863 to 1930) emigrated from the Netherlands to America as a child. He rose from working as an office boy at the the largest telegraph company to the Editorship of the very popular 'Ladies Home Journal', a post he held for 30 years. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography and also created Bok Tower Gardens in Florida. Bok offered prizes to the students of Hope College, in Holland, Michigan for the most complete essay on the topic of the book's title. As a reward for the winning essay, Bok underwrote the printing of Huizinga's essay. This book focuses on the Dutch immigration during the years 1846 and 1847 due to religious intolerance and includes information about the Dutch Reformed Church in that region. Dutch immigrants founded towns in Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Washington State and elsewhere. In part due to New York's Hudson-Fulton Celebration, a history fair that commemorated the state and city's early Dutch roots, 1909 was a banner year for honoring Dutch history and heritage in the United States.
