Description: 1909-1911 T206, Old Mill (SL) Southern League - J. Ross Helm, Columbus - SGC 2.5 On the Card & Back - The Southern League cards are a popular (and difficult to find) subset of the T206 collection, featuring 48 players from four minor leagues: the Texas, South Atlantic, Virginia, and Southern Association. These cards come with three different backs: Piedmont 350 (the most common), Old Mill (rarer and more sought after), and Brown Hindu (the rarest of the three). On the Player - Little is known about James Ross Helm beyond his minor league career. Born in Alabama in May 1883, Helm spent 12 seasons pitching in the minors, compiling a record of 116 wins and 124 losses. His standout years came in 1907 and 1908. At age 24, he posted an 18-13 record with the Macon Brigands in 1907, followed by an 11-4 season with the Jacksonville Jays in 1908. These strong performances likely earned him a place in the T206 set, placing him alongside pitching legends like Cy Young, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson. Helm retired after a rough 1914 season, in which he won just 5 games while losing 19. Set information - The 1909-1911 T206 set is considered by many as the most important baseball card set in the hobby field. Together with the 1933 Goudey and 1952 Topps sets, the T206 completes the “Big Three” classic baseball card sets. Affectionately named “The Monster” based on its 524-card size, the T206 is home to some of the most valuable vintage baseball cards, including the famed T206 Honus Wagner rarity.
