Description: 1909-11 T206 Piedmont 350 - Lena Blackburne, Providence Grays - PSA 2 On the Player - Russell Aubrey "Lena" Blackburne (1886-1968) was an MLB infielder, manager, coach, and scout. Between 1910 and 1929, Blackburne played for the Chicago White Sox (1910, 1912, 1914–1915, 1927, 1929), Cincinnati Reds (1918), Boston Braves (1919) and Philadelphia Phillies (1919). He is pictured on his T206 card playing for the 1909 Eastern League Providence Grays. While his playing career was long, Blackburne’s lasting impact came off the field. In the 1930s, while coaching for the Philadelphia Athletics, Blackburne developed a special mud collected from a tributary of the Delaware River. The mud was perfect for reducing the slickness of new baseballs, making them easier to grip without damaging the ball. This innovation quickly gained widespread use, and "Lena Blackburne Rubbing Mud" became the industry standard for baseballs, used in Major and Minor Leagues alike, for nearly a century. On the Set - The 1909-1911 T206 set is considered by many as the most important baseball card set in the hobby field. Together with the 1933 Goudey and 1952 Topps sets, the T206 completes the “Big Three” classic baseball card sets. Affectionately named “The Monster” based on its 524-card size, the T206 is home to some of the most valuable vintage baseball cards, including the famed T206 Honus Wagner rarity.
