Please see our photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A rare early twenty-first century linguistic study of the Bhil languages by Sir George Abraham Grierson (1851-1914). Grierson was an Irish administrator in the Indian Civil Service and linguist. He became Superintendent of the Linguistic Survey of India in 1898 and surveyed people across British-occupied-India, documented spoken languages, recorded voices, written forms and was responsible for documenting information on 179 languages, and 544 dialects which he placed in 5 language families. He published his findings of the Linguistic survey in a series that consisted of 19 volumes. The Bhil languages are a group of Indo-Aryan languages spoken by Bhils, an ethnic group in western India and members of a tribal group outside the fold of the caste system. They constitute the primary languages of the southern Aravalli Range in Rajasthan and the western Satpura Range in Madhya Pradesh, northwestern Maharashtra, and southern Gujarat. The additional languages include Khandeshi, an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the Khandesh region of north-west Maharashtra and also in Gujarat. Also, Lambadi, Lambani, Lamani or Banjari is a Western Indo-Aryan language spoken by the Banjara people across India. The language does not have a native script. This specific book once resided in the prestigious library of language scholar Johannes Rahder (1898-1988). Rahder was a Dutch Orientalist and professor of Japanese at the University of Leiden from 1931 through 1946, and at Yale University from 1947 through 1965. He was depicted in the work of the legendary Langston Hughes' (1901-1967) 'I Wonder, I Wander'. After a brief meeting between the two figures on the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1933, Hughes recognized Rahder as being a "...famous authority on obscure Oriental languages". Rahder's black-inked Yale University faculty stamp and pen markings can be found throughout this folio. FORN-SHELF-0753-BB-0524-eb0717
