Clifford Ambrose Truesdell III (1919-2000) was an American Mathematician, natural philosopher, and historian of science. He obtained a B.S. in mathematics and physics in 1941, and a M.S. in mathematics in 1942. In 1943, the date of his signature, he received a Ph.D. In mathematics from Princeton University. Truesdell was a professor of rational mechanics at Johns Hopkins University from 1961 to his retirement in 1989. He was the founder & editor of the journals Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis & Archive for History of Exact Sciences. Spoke proficiently in French, German, Italian, Greek, and Latin.
