Oates [later governor of Alabama] The War Between the Union and the Confederacy and its Lost Opportunities with a History of the 15th Alabama Regiment and the Forty-Eight Battles in Which it was EngagedNew York, Neale Publishing Company, 1905; 1st & only original 1905 edition; with the omnipresent "Fifth Thousand" printed on the title page. With 808 pages (it's a thick, detailed book), + 13 illustrations; bound in Confederate Gray Cloth; with colorful Union & Confederate (Battle] Flags on the cover.Howes O2 (rated double "aa") "One of the more interesting and important Confederate memoirs. Oates saw a substantial portion of the war and did not hesitate to report in an opinionated and detailed fashion. The portions of the book which stray from eyewitness reporting into secondary ramblings are less than reliable, but when Oates writes of what he saw himself, it is well worth reading. The Gettysburg segment is particularly significant. A marvelous roster covering every company of the 15th Alabama is one of the volume's highlights. There are also brief sketches of each company in the 4th, 44th and 48th Alabama, and listing of company level officers," Robert Krick in NEALE BOOKSBook is very tight - especially for one this heavy and thick. No broken or cracked hinges. Cloth darkened a bit as is the gilt on the spine but the Confederate & USA flags are bright & clear.
