Description: Up for sale is a 1905 Era Canton Nanyang Bros. Tobacco Co. Hong Kong Cigarettes Employee Badge Medal "The Nanyang Brothers Tobacco Company was a Chinese family-run enterprise. Nanyang's founder, Jian Zhaonan (1870–1923) from Guangzhou (Canton), had gained business experience in Japan, Hong Kong, and Bangkok before he established the Nanyang business with his brother Jian Yujie in Hong Kong in 1905. Nanyang's cigarettes were sold throughout countries such as Thailand, Malaya, Indonesia, and Borneo where the company was able to operate without encountering severe government tobacco monopolies, steep import duties, or competition from the British-American Tobacco Company (BAT), which dominated the China cigarette market at the time" (Nanyang Brothers Tobacco Encyclopedia.com). This is a very unique collectible from Nanyang Bros. I couldn't find another example anywhere online. There are other collectibles from this firm including the old cigarette packs, trade cards, and even old postcards with a factory scene in Hong Kong similar to the scene depicted on this medal. Circulated condition with some slight bends. I believe this was a pinback medal, but the pin is missing on the back side. The medal is made of copper and measures 27mm in diameter.
