We Combine Multiple Purchase and Gladly Refund Extra Shipping Fees Description: It is an authentic antique map approximately 120 years old from Melchoir Huebinger's Atlas of the State of Iowa with a copyright date printed on the map near the title block stating: "Copyrighted 1904 by the Iowa Publishing Co., Davenport, Iowa." A copy of the title page is also included for documentation. A very rare original first edition Huebinger Map. You can find some of his township maps and there are reproductions, but the original county maps are almost nonexistent other than a couple in the Iowa State Library. A very attractive map with the unique Iowa corn stalk border that Huebringer is noted for, still very bright with strong color, see the condition report below. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as seen in the pics. Size: The entire page measures 18 1/4 by 29 inches (46x74cm) Condition: Fair to Good, an original antique map printed in 1904, blank on reverse, printed on a bright page with nice strong color and a centerfold as issued. There are a couple of minor dampstains on the edges and a few minor edgetears with archival repairs on reverse. There ae few light smudges mainly around the margins and slightly bumped upper corners and a soft diagonal crease of about 6 inches across the bottom right corner, mainly noticeable on reverse, best to see the pics for more info. It is a large double page map with a centerfold that should be handled with care and will be shipped in a large plastic sleeve for viewing, rolled in brown paper to protect the edges and shipping in a large heavy duty cardboard tube. Pics are of the actual map that will be shipped. Melchoir Huebinger (1854-1923) was born in Limburg, Germany, trained as a surveyer/civil engineer in the German Army in the 1870s and emigrated to Davenport in 1880. He began his career in Iowa as a Surveyor for the Army Corps of Engineers at Rock Island and shortly began to produce his first local atlas of Scott County (1882) and various other local survey maps including a large scale map of the city of Davenport in 1890. He exhibited his maps at the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893. In 1902, he began work on the Atlas of the State of Iowa, which debuted at the Iowa Pavilion in the St. Louis Worlds Fair in 1904 along with a billboard size Iowa Map. He continued to produce hundreds of maps and atlases, including many lowa county atlases out of his workshop until 1910, when he moved his business, the Iowa Publishing Company, from Davenport to Des Moines to begin another phase of his career in the production of automobile maps and atlases including the first Iowa automobile atlas, entitled the Iowa Good Roads Automobile Atlas in 1912, which soon followed a large variety of "Good Road Guides" and individual pocket road maps, travel guides, souvenir books, post cards, etc. Huebinger was an exceptional business man and promoter as well as a highly skilled cartographer and printer fulfilling a need for accurate maps bridging the gap between the county platt maps of the late 19th century and the modern automobile map of the early 20th century. There are a couple of very good historical sites online for more info on his life and work.
