Both volumes are No. 26.With etched vignette titles and illustrations by the prominent 19th century illustrator, George Cruiksank. Eleven plates to volume I and nine plates to volume II. Collated complete. These tales, translated from the original German by Edgar Taylor, were collected by Jacob and Willhelm Grimm for a period of years.The translations were initially published anonymously by Taylor, and he wrote to the Grimms that his translations were for 'the amusement of some young friends principally in view'. It is regarded by many as the first modern illustrated children's book.The stories to this work include 'Hansel and Grettel', 'The Frog Prince', 'Rumplestiltskin', 'Little Red Riding Hood' and 'Rapunzel'. CONDITION In the publisher's boards with facsimile print of the original covers. Externally, with discolouring to the boards and wear to the extremities. Spines are sunned, with section of paper coming away to the spine of Vol I. Handling marks to the boards. Internally, generally firmly bound. Front free endpapers to Vol I disbound but present. Pages are generally bright and clean with offsetting to the endpapers and the odd spot.
