Description: THE HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES Complete Four Volume Set Written by Jacob Harris Patton and John Lord with special articles by Theodore Roosevelt, James Cardinal Gibbons, George F. Hoar, James Bryce, Grover Cleveland, and others. Published by The University Society, New York. Copyright 1903; There is no statement of printing or date, but probably 1903 or ’04. First thus, as these authors published their own histories earlier in the 19th century and later collaborated on several works including this final one. Earlier editions bore the titles : History of the United States of America (1860), Patton's concise History of the American People (1876), Four hundred years of American history (1892), A Concise History of the American People (1901). This edition differs from the last in certain changes at the beginning of volume 1 and the end of volume 3 (taking the history to the dawn of the 20th century, adding the writings by Roosevelt, Cleveland and others); also in the addition of volume 4 on the United States Government. Jacob Patton died in 1903 when this set was published. The set is well illustrated with woodcuts, duogravures, engravings, maps and even a few color plates. This complete four volume set once belonged to a Roy Meredith of the Coast Artillery, 72nd Company, a company formed in Rhode Island in 1901, but stationed mostly in Georgia afterwards, through World War One, before being disbanded in New Jersey in 1924. His name stamp is visible on the original front endpaper of each volume. Although these books don’t have the Coast Artillery stamps, other books purchased by me in this lot did, so that is why I know that information about Roy. From Wikipedia: Jacob Harris Patton (1812 – 1903) was an American historian and political writer. John Lord (10 September 1810 – 15 December 1894) was an American historian and lecturer. Born at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, he graduated from Dartmouth in 1833 and then entered the Andover Theological Seminary, where in his second year he wrote a series of lectures on the Dark Ages, which he delivered the next fall during a tour through northern New York. After graduating at Andover he became an agent for the American Peace Society. Though not ordained to the ministry, he was called to a Congregational Church at New Marlboro, Massachusetts, and then to one at Stockbridge, Massachusetts. In 1840 he gave up his pastoral duties to become a public lecturer and spend time on literary activities. In 1843-46, he was in England giving lectures on the Middle Ages, and on his return to the United States continued to lecture for many years in the principal towns and cities, giving over 6,000 lectures in all. In 1864, he received his LL.D. from the University of the City of New York. From 1866 to 1876, he was lecturer on history at Dartmouth College. From the Preface: “Elaborate histories of the United States have been ably written, while compends and school histories--well adapted to the place they are designed to fill--are more numerous. Between these compends and the works extending from four to twelve volumes there is necessity, as well as room, for a history that shall be sufficiently elaborate to trace the direct influences that have had effect in moulding the character of the Nation and its institutions, moral and political--one that treats more fully of the “Inner Life” of the American people, and so constructed that the reader can obtain a clear conception of the forces that have made the Nation what it is. In accordance with this view, the present work is designed to present, as full as is consistent with such a plan, those events which are interesting in themselves and characteristic of the times and people. While the author has availed himself as much as possible of the original authorities, and acknowledges his obligations to the many elaborate United States and State histories, his main effort has been to set forth our story in his own language, wrought into a consecutive narrative, confining himself to the true elements of history--that is, only to those events and principles that have had influence; making, as occasion requires, and informal summary of the less important facts or events, in order to keep perfect the thread of the narrative. Among the motive forces, due recognition has been given to the influence of moral truths derived from the Bible, in leading the people to cherish liberty of speech, free institutions, and the general education of their children.” DESCRIPTION: 1284 pages volumes 1- 3 and 476 pages volume 4 (including index for all four volumes Each volume 9 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches Complete 4 Volume set of oxblood red cloth hardcovers Over 11 pounds of books! CONDITION: These books are in very good condition. There are no dustjackets--if they ever had them. All four volumes have been rebound and recased in their original covers. The covers are an oxblood red ribbed cloth with an embossed design in the front board and gilt lettering on the spines. All covers show some light soiling and spotting. The spines are streaked somewhat from soil or soot, although I cleaned them as much as is possible without doing any damage. The crease somewhat visible in the photo of the upper part of volume one is not a tear--just a bit of a bend in the cloth. Volume 3 has some water damage showing at the lower corners, near the spine of both boards. All four volumes have had some restoration done to the head and foot of the spines to reverse the fraying here. The original endpapers have the first owner’s name stamp, but new endpapers, the brown acid-free papers, were used to recase the books. All volumes have some foxing of the original endpapers and the tissue guards have become heavily foxed and transferred the foxing to the frontispieces and title pages. This is visible in the photos provided. Volume 3 has damp staining on the inner lower corners of most first pages that becomes smaller as you go into the interior until it disappears entirely about half-way through the book. The rest of the interiors are nice with no marks, underlining, foxing, etc. The hinges and binding are very tight with no loose or missing pages. All maps, illustrations etc, are present.
