Description: 16.00 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE StLouBrown's Bygone Days "Let Bygones Be back" Antique 1904 or 1908 pinback, “Deneen for Governor,” for the campaign of Republican Charles Deneen, who served from 1905-1913, later ending his career as U.S. senator. Deneen (1863-1940) was the first Illinois governor to serve two consecutive terms totaling eight years. He was governor during the infamous 1908 Race Riot in Springfield, which prompted formation of the NAACP the following year in New York. Deneen served in the Illinois House from 1892-1894, followed by a stint as Cook County state’s attorney. In 1904, he won the GOP nomination for governor from incumbent Gov. Richard Yates Jr. in the state convention. As governor, he supported Illinois’ anti-lynching law in 1905, and when a crowd of 10,000 witnessed a lynching in Cairo in 1909, followed by a second, he mobilized the National Guard to suppress violence and later dismissed Sheriff Frank E. Davis for failing to protect the lynched men. In 1924, he won the Republican nomination for U.S. senator from Medill McCormick, from the family that owned the Chicago Tribune, and won election to the seat. McCormick committed suicide in early 1925, and his wife, Ruth McCormick, who blamed Deneen for her husband’s demise, beat Deneen for the nomination to his seat in 1930, although she lost the general election.
