Description: Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor Act II Scene IMrs. Ford and Mrs PagePainted by Rev. Wm. Peters Engraved by Rev. Rob' Thew Engraver to R. H. the Prince of Wales1793 by John & Jos. Boydell at the Shakespeare Gallery Pall Mall_ Cheaptide London.Image size is 15 3/4" x 22 1/4". Paper size is approx. 18" x 25 1/2".The print is sealed in plastic and has cardboard backing.The print paper is chipped on the right upper and side edge and there is foxing.(Hard to take photos through the plastic) John Boydell (1719-1804), a London alderman, made his fortune as a publisher of books, illustrations and engravings that were popular in England and on the continent.In 1786, he and a group of associates devised a plan to publish an edition of engravings based on commissioned paintings of scenes from Shakespeare's playsby the best artists of the period. Boydell opened The Shakespeare Gallery in 1789 in Pall Mall to house the painting collection, and the first set of engravings based on the works was issued in 1791.The nine volume folio edition was published in 1802, and in 1803 Boydell printed the two volume elephant folios of all the engravings based on the paintings in the gallery. Matthew William Peters (1742 - 1814) was en English portrait and genre painter.
