His chief characteristic was that he painted the life that he knew. His pictures were of the everyday life of his time, and of the experiences of the people with whom he mixed. He depicted the purity and simplicity, as well as showing much direct and instinctive feeling for nature. His colouring is mellow, rich in tone, and vibrant in quality. John Nettleship was a painter himself creating pieces depicting lions, tigers and cheetahs. He greatly admired Morland's work, describing his work as "soul shining and energizing".
