Description: 10 Shares of Northern Pacific Railroad Common Stock signed by President Brayton Ives. Ives was a Brigadier General of the Union Army in the Civil War. He fought in the battles of Harrison's Landing, Beaver Dam, Reame's Station, Five Forks and Sailor's Creek. Later assigned to the Army of The Potomac and took part in Sheridan's Raid from May 9-26,1864. He commanded Gen. Grant's escort when he went to Appomattox to receive Gen. Lee's surrender. Ives later became a banker, President of the New York Stock Exchange, President of the Northern Pacific Railroad and a famous collector of fine art and books. The Northern Pacific Railroad was established by an Act of Congress and President Abraham Lincoln on July 2, 1864 as the first northern transcontinental railroad in the United States. Much of its route was to follow the route of the famed 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition across the uncharted West. The certificate remains in Excellent condition. It was issued May 14, 1895. It has various cancellation punch holes which affect signature slightly (see picture) and a few small pin holes which is normal for this era stock. Still carries issue stub on left margin of certificate. This historic document was printed by the American Banknote Company and has an ornate border around it with a vignette of a train by telegraph lines and a lower vignette of Fredrick Billings.
