Description: Here is a vintage pocket size record book / ledger from the Root, Norton & Co. Live Stock Commission Merchants located at the Union Stock Yards in Chicago. This book dates back to 1895-1896 with a calendar from those years in the back. The little book was a company promotion item and was probably given to customers to keep track of their livestock purchases. The columns include cattle, hogs, weight, cash advanced, bought from. Only two of the pages have writing in pencil that has nothing to do with livestock but is hard to read. The very last page appears to have been torn away. All the other pages are unmarked and clean. The covers are made of a soft leather that has wear and some soil. There is a small tear flap at the bottom spine end. For a century, Chicago was the center of meat packing for the country. The Union Stock Yards was the first and biggest yard beginning in about 1865. The stock yards closed in the mid 1960's. 3 1/2 inches x 6 1/2 inches. Ships with USPS First Class mail, signature required.
