He was 78 years old.Rabbi Davidson was president of the Rabbincal Assembly while he served as president of the Synagogue Council of America. During that time he was also a member of the Jewish Welfare Board.“He may have been the only rabbi in the history of the nation to serve in all three posts at one time,” said Rabbi Wolfe Kelman, executive vice president of the Rabbinical Assembly. “Whenever there were delicate sensitive areas requiring firm leadership, he was usually put in charge of resolving differences. He had his own feelings, everyone knew, but he could be counted on to be a fair arbitrator of disputes.”Rabbi Kelman said that in 1964, during a debate between conservative rabbis concerning a proposal that they cooperate with Reformed rabbis in matters concerning Israel, Rabbi Davidson presided over the debates “with what could only be called a healing fairness.”
