Description: [David B. Hill (1843–1910)] [1892 U.S. Presidential Candidate:] An Outline of the Official Life and Public Services of His Excellency David B. Hill. New York: Printed by Albert B. King, 1888. [2], 18pp. Pamphlet. 4¾ x 3¾ inches. Self-wrappers; staple bound. Old staining to self-wrapper and to leaves; all legible; otherwise, good. Unrecorded on OCLC, a rare and ephemeral campaign biography throwaway from the 1888 New York gubernatorial race which re-elected sitting-Governor David B. Hill to a second term. Hill was an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for his party’s nomination for the 1892 U.S. presidential election. Hill began his career as a lawyer in Elmira, New York. As a Democrat he served in the state Assembly, held one term as mayor of Elmira in 1882, and was Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1883 to 1885. From 1886 to 1887 he was president of the New York State Bar Association. In 1885, when Grover Cleveland left office as Governor of New York following his election as President of the United States, Hill became governor of New York. He won election to that office twice in his own right, the present pamphlet being from his second race, its cover proudly declaring “I am a Democrat.” Hill served one term in the United States Senate, serving from 1891 to 1897. According to American National Biography (ANB): “Hill was a dedicated partisan. In 1885 he coined the phrase ‘I am a Democrat!’ by which he was identified throughout his career. ... From 1885 through the mid-1890s Hill and Cleveland battled for control of the New York party as well as for the Democratic presidential nomination. Hill generally succeeded in controlling the Democratic state organization but failed to capture the presidential nomination he coveted. He came closest in 1892, when he pegged his nomination hopes on his support for the free coinage of silver. However, the issue failed to generate the appeal among delegates that it would in 1896, and Hill finished a distant second behind Cleveland in the balloting. ... The 1892 Democratic National Convention represented the apex of Hill’s career.” Cleveland went on to defeat President Benjamin Harrison in the general election.
