Description: This is a now rare issue, especially in this very good condition, of the May 1892 number of the Century Illustrated Magazine. See photo #4 for complete contents of this issue. Thick, heavy, 160 page issue plus 110 pages of advertisements. This issue is highlighted with a two page spread of five of Herman Melville's last poems (he had passed away the previous September). Introduced by poet, critic and anthologist Arthur Stedman, who draws upon two privately printed pamphlets that Melville desired to retain for personal, private use, John Marr and Other Sailors (1888) and Timoleon (1891).There had only been 25 copies of each collection printed in his last years. Also of note here (see photo #5) is a 1/2 page advertisement by the United States Book Company (with a photo of the aged Melville) for four of his works, including Moby-Dick, then being made available for sale, edited by Arthur Stedman.
