Description: A page from an antique scrapbook with color flowers lithograph print pasted on one side, and 2 clipped poems on the other side. The scrapbook page is 8 1/2" x 11 1/4" -------- " Japan Spireas " " 1. Bumalda 2. Fortunei Rosea 3. Fortunei Alba " " Litho. by H. M. Wall , Brooklyn NY " Although not dated, this color lithograph plate was probably clipped from a seed / nursery catalog printed in the late 1890s. Lithographer H. M. Wall produced a series of chromolithograph flower prints in the 1890s. Spiraea japonica, the Japanese meadowsweet or Japanese spiraea, is a plant in the family Rosaceae. It is a deciduous, perennial shrub native to Japan , China , and Korea , but is naturalized throughout much of the Eastern and Midwest areas of the United States and parts of Canada. It was introduced in North America as an ornamental landscape plant and first cultivated in the northeastern states around 1870. -------- The poems were clipped over 120 years ago ; they are from a newspaper printed in the year 1901. ( the newspaper printed a daily series of poems starting on July 28, 1901 ) The creator of the scrapbook saved the poems and pasted them into the scrapbook. 1. " The Knight's Toast " ( Although printed without attribution in this clipping, this poem was written by Scottish author Sir Walter Scott [ 1771 - 1832 ]. This poem has the flavor of the romantic days of King Arthur and the knights of the round table ; Saint Leon figures in it prominently ) 2. " Pictures Of Memory " by Alice Cary ( 1820 - 1871 ) ( Alice Cary’s " Pictures of Memory " was praised by Edgar Allan Poe , who described it as her most noble poem. It continued to be published in poetry anthologies well into the 20th century. As with many of Alice Cary's works, it is a poem touched with sadness. "Pictures Of Memory " remembers her little brother who died in her youth, and who, in her memory, " in the lap of that old dim forest, lieth in peace, asleep .... asleep by the gates of light." ) --------- Also pasted to this scrapbook page is an antique advertising card for " Hampton House " ( a hotel ), with a young boy and girl, brother and sister, at the seaside, looking at the wild waves of the sea. ---------- Carefully packed for shipment to the buyer.
