1890's ALLEN & GINTER PERIQUE TOBACCO TIN LITHOGRAPH SQUARE CORNER TOBACCO TIN

Description: Very rare 1890's antique lithographed rectangular tin with square corners and a hinged lid. This tobacco tin dates to the time of John F. Allen and Lewis Ginter, who formed a tobacco manufacturing partnership, Allen & Ginter, in Richmond, Virginia, in 1880, which merged with four other companies to form the American Tobacco Company in 1890. Perique is a type of tobacco known for its strong, powerful, fruity aroma. Although difficult to decipher in photo, the text on the side panel of the tin states: The Genuine Perique Tobacco is only grown on Grand Point Ridge Parish of St. James States of Louisiana. The other side panel states: FACTORY 14 -- Second District of Virginia. Notice: The manufacturers of this tobacco have complied with all the requirements of law. Every person is cautioned under the penalties of law not to use this package for Tobacco again. The back panel states: Manufactured by the Allen & Ginter branch of the American Tobacco Co., Richmond, Virginia, U.S.A. The lid features an image of the Allen & Ginter trademark featuring "The Old Planter," a bust portrait of a plantation owner smoking a cigarette. The lid and the side panels of the Tin feature a black background while the bottom of the Tin and the interior surface feature a japanned surface. The exterior bottom of the tin bears the stamp of a tin can manufacturing company in New York. The tin measures approximately 4" long x 2 1/2" wide x 1 ½" tall (with lid closed). The tin is empty. It is in antique condition with wear and tear as one would expect from age and use (please refer to photos). Please examine photos closely and enlarge to confirm description and condition.
