Description: 1890 Mayo's Cut Plug N310 - Young Griffo, Hall of Fame Boxer - SGC 2 On the Boxer - Young Griffo (1871-1927), born Albert Griffiths in Australia, was a prominent featherweight boxer in the 1890s, known for his exceptional defensive skills and agility in the ring. He became the World Featherweight Champion in 1890 after defeating Torpedo Billy Murphy, becoming one of the first boxing world champions in any class. Griffo was noted for his ability to dodge punches with ease, making him a defensive pioneer. Despite his talent, he struggled with alcohol throughout his career, which affected his performance and ultimately led to his decline. Griffo's unique style and natural reflexes, however, left a lasting impact on boxing, inspiring defensive tactics used by later champions. He was inducted into the Ring Magazine Hall of Fame in 1954, the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991, and the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003. On the 1890 N310 Mayo's Cut Plug Prizefighters set - Released around 1890, the N310 Mayo Cut Plug Prizefighters set has its place among the earliest forms of collectible sports cards. Predating the famous N300 baseball cards of the same era, the N310 boxing cards have white borders and blank backs. The 1895 N300 Mayo baseball set had black borders and black backs. The N310 cards feature the top boxers of the era. While no title is given to them on the cards, they were dubbed the Prizefighters set by Jefferson Burdick in the American Card Catalog. Issued by P.H. Mayo & Brother, Richmond, Virginia, the cards featured distinctive black-and-white photographs of prominent boxers of the time, set against a simple, unadorned background. Each card measured approximately 1 5/8” by 2 5/8”. There are 35 boxers presented in the N310 set.
