Additional Information This depiction of Washington State was published only one year before the state joined the Union and stands as a testament to the remote outpost that was booming as railways allowed the port in Seattle to distribute goods throughout the country. Each railroad is distinguished by a unique color and named, respectively. The completion of these railroad hubs cannot be underestimated, and their importance for the economy of the region. Produced by prolific American mapmaker George Cram, the unique aesthetic displayed here immediately transports the viewer back in time and is truly an authentic piece of cartographical history. Cram, who had served in the Union during the Civil War, produced many of these types of maps but became best known when he became the first American mapmaker to create a World Atlas in 1901. Lumber, mining, and agriculture were the primary economic drivers for the state in the late 20th century, and by 1888 Seattle’s ports were thriving. This shift in the economy would continue, and eventually, Seattle would surpass Portland as the largest port in the Northwest. With the Yukon Gold Rush in 1893, Seattle had become the last stop for eager miners before heading into the rugged terrain of the Yukon Mountains seeking fortune. As such, Seattle developed a thriving merchant class and emerged prosperously. This map was produced one year before the Great Seattle Fire, which ravaged the downtown and called for changes to building codes, which led the city to adopt distinctive steel and glass architecture. Our museum quality giclee Washington State art print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching map of Washington State poster / Map Pacific Northwest makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
