Description: 1888 Japanese Art Phoenix and Mouse from Art Student to Mentor This artwork, a New Year's card, was sent from Nakajima Takejiro (中島武次郎) of Tokyo to Maeda Yoshihiko (前田吉彦, 1849–1904) of Kobe in 1888, the Year of the Rat. Nakajima used ink to illustrate a fierce, rising phoenix and a view of a rat (mouse) from the rear, all confidently drawn. Because Nakajima addresses Maeda as 先生机下 (sensei-kika, a traditional Japanese honorific phrase that is a respectful way to address a teacher or mentor in a letter or formal communication), Nakajima was likely an art student of Maeda Yoshihiko. Maeda Yoshihiko (1849–1904) was a Meiji period Western-Style Painter. We will be publishing over 300 postcards sent to Maeda Yoshihiko. It will likely take us 2-3 years.
