1887 American Impressionist O/C. Ladies In Floral Garden. Coast Of Newport RI?

Description: For sale is a brilliantly colorful American impressionist oil on canvas painting dated 1887. The painting is somewhat of a mystery to us. Impressionism really got it’s foothold in the US in about 1886 after making its way over from Europe and becoming all the rage. This painting is dated 1887 on the back and is signed only with the first name of Edith and is dedicated to presumedly her friend name Kittie Rush. We could find no information on her. Someone suggested the artist Edith Helena Adie (1865 - 1947) who painted very similar scenes with lush floral gardens and coastal scenes with sailboats off in the distance. But she was English, and did mostly watercolors, and this painting is clearly on an American stretcher with American metal stretcher keys. The ADS metal stretcher keys were patented in about 1884 so we know these are period and original to the wooden stretcher. We were told it’s a Newport Rhode Island coastal scene and that it definitely came out of the northeast from a private estate. But we have nothing to confirm the location. That’s all we know. It certainly could be a Newport scene. Two women of means dressed in elaborate period flowing white dresses standing outside in the lush floral gardens on the grounds of a Newport mansion. The two women are amongst a bountiful floral garden bursting with colorful flowers and plants. The woman standing gazes intently out at the ocean as sail boats cruise by just off shore. Perhaps her husband being aboard one of them. The other woman is seated and is probably gazing out at another vantage point of the coast. Parts of the artwork look as if done by the hands of an exceptional impressionist artist, especially the attention to detail on the flowers with very impressionistic brush stroke work. The two female figures look to have been done by the hand of a schooled but perhaps not an exceptional artist. Perhaps the artist was more adept at painting landscapes than figures but they are still well done. The overall work is very attractive and desirable. The frame is a period late 19th century picture frame. Whether it’s original to the painting we are unsure. There looks to be some adjustments on the back to properly fit the painting into the frame. These look newer than the age of the frame so we are unsure. Like many of these old picture frames this frame was painted over in the early to mid 20th century with that gold based radiator paint which oxidizes to a matte bronze color overtime as has this frame. Just a wonderful American school impressionist painting. It would look spectacular in a better frame. I guess one could search databases for every Edith who painted in the 1880s to help narrow down the search. A quick glimpse noted over 600 artists named Edith in some art databases. Condition: the painting itself being in excellent condition, and possibly having been cleaned at some point in us history. The frame with age-appropriate, where, and as noted above.
