Additional Information Produced by prolific lithography house Britton & Rey and published by prominent local businessman and real estate agent James A. Clayton this unique landowner map offers a window to the iconic cities history. Britton & Rey's distinctive style is a prime example of the lithography techniques employed in the late nineteenth century. Published ten years prior to his death, Clayton was a well-known resident who had come to the region during the Gold Rush. In 1850 San Jose became the first incorporated city in California following the state's admission into the Union in September of the same year. Mexico ceded the land to the United States in the Treaty of Hidalgo in 1848 following the conclusion of the Mexican-American War. San Jose became the first state capital and was known as a hub for innovation and technology. In the early parts of the twentieth century, San Jose was home to a thriving economy spurred on by advancements in aviation. The local economy had remained primarily agricultural, though on a large scale, not individual plots of land, and improvements in canning and food preservation attracted immigrants from Southeast Asia as well as Ireland and Western Europe. By the latter portions of the nineteenth century, the Santa Clara Valley was among the world's most productive agricultural areas. This map contains interesting historical details and includes land ownership records. Its crisp, distinctive style and unique aesthetic immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
