Description: This is 1884-1885 Catalogue of Standard and Miscellaneous books of the Home Library Association of Baltimore and Chicago. The inside front cover and the back cover explain the purpose of the organization. Hill & Harvey Publishing of Baltimore, worked with the publishers of "standard authors" and with the Home Library Association of Chicago, to create a collections of books at low prices that would enable the average family to acquire them and "foster a taste for the better class of literature - one of the strongest and most beneficial of home influences". To order from the catalog, customers had to purchase a copy of a one volume encyclopedia called Peale's Educator and Cyclopedia of Reference, Historical, Biographical, Scientific & Statistical - an 840 page illustrated book with a little information on everything imaginable. R.S. Peale, the author, was the president of the Home Library Association. Inside was a certificate of membership dated June 17, 1885 for the former owner of this catalog. The 7 3/4 by 10 3/4 inch catalog has 16 pages, and offers sets of Dickens, Shakespeare, George Eliot and Macaulay and a lists of classics offered for 60 cents in one edition and 40 cents in another
