Description: Found in an estate in Washington DC, this interesting scrapbook was fashioned from an actual book measuring about 9.5" by 6.0", where the original owner pasted the particles over the pages of the book. There are places where one can see the original text on the pages between or beneath pasted articles. In order to do this, the owner had to remove pages from the between between pasted pages to make room for the pasted articles. The individual numbered the resulting pages in ink, and still had 183 pages of pasted articles. Where dates are seen, they are between 1884 and 1886. The book's title remains unknown - the spine title is covered over with a paste-on that says Journalism (I believe). I suspect the individual who put this together was a journalist him/herself. The first article in the book is a multi-page article on the Washington Daily Chronicle titled, "Signal Triumph of the Washington Daily Chronicle". Another clue that the original owner was in journalism is that the only non-newspaper clipping in there was a notice from the American Newspaper Correspondence Company. The individual titled this scrapbook, "Newspaporial" on the first page. Articles he clipped were on journalism, sports, politics, a few clippings on Thoreau, history including 2 articles on The Battle of Sadowa - the decisive battle of the Austro-Prussian War in which the Kingdom of Prussia defeated the Austrian Empire. It occurred in 1886. The book ends with a cool newspaper map on "Napolean's New Possessions in Italy". The pages are stiff with some waviness. There is a variability in the age-toning, some light some much darker, but all legible. The print is small so a magnifying glass would be useful. INTERESTING READING I WOULD IMAGINE! B146
