Description: THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER For Young People of All Ages Written by Mark Twain and published by James R. Osgood and Company, Boston. Copyright 1881; printed 1882. It is the first edition but a probable 2nd issue or later state with most of the text errors corrected. Franklin Press is stated on the back of the title page with corrections to type (p.124.1--estate to state, 263-9 up--do not to do, 362-3 up—reigned to reined). There are 192 illustrations! Full sheep copies of this book are incredibly hard to find in better than fair condition as the acidic leather tanning processes used in the latter half of the 19th century caused the leather at the joints to rot and deteriorate so most, if not nearly all, copies have missing or crumbling spines and the boards hanging on by the cords only or completely loose. This book has been restored with nearly all the original leather and spine labels still intact. From Wikipedia: The Prince and the Pauper is a novel by American author Mark Twain. It was first published in 1881 in Canada, before its 1882 publication in the United States. The novel represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, it tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court off Pudding Lane in London, and Prince Edward, son of King Henry VIII. Twain wrote The Prince and the Pauper having already started The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Twain wrote, "My idea is to afford a realizing sense of the exceeding severity of the laws of that day by inflicting some of their penalties upon the King himself and allowing him a chance to see the rest of them applied to others…" Having returned from a second European tour which formed the basis of A Tramp Abroad (1880), Twain read extensively English and French history. Initially intended as a play, it was originally set in Victorian England before he decided to set it further back in time. DESCRIPTION: 411 pages 8 3/4 x 7 inches First Edition, later state, full sheep leather hardcover CONDITION: This book is in very good condition with significant restoration. All the original materials which show (and some which don’t) have been used to restore this book at great cost in time and labor. The book was rebound using new leather (calf) for the spine. The original sheep covered boards were retained with the corners repaired and reinforced. The original spine leather and spine labels were retained and placed over the new leather spine with the new leather at the joints carefully colored to match the old leather. The gilt borders on the raised bands have been redone. The textblock has been rebound into the cover using new stronger cloth spine reinforcing (instead of the original cheap mesh mull). This book was not bound originally using cords. The original spine caps were reused. The original, fancy, marbled endpapers have been retained and reused with matching marbled paper reinforcing at the hinges. The pages are somewhat toned with age (much less than usual), but the interior is actually better and cleaner than most copies of the first edition I have seen. There are no major marks, underlining, or highlighting. There are no tears. All pages and illustrations are present. It is difficult to find this book in better condition or to find one that looks as attractive on the shelf! The book will come with a fitted, clear mylar cover.
