Description: Humorous 1870s Dr. Wm Hall's Balsam for the Lungs Fold Down Victorian Trade Card. Snake Oil Tonic Advertising. Trade Card Collector Gift. Ephemera. Medicinal snake oil at its' best! Dr. Wm. Hall's 'Balsam for the Lungs' is a fantastical and amusing example of Victorian era false advertising. A unique gift for the med student, doctor or Victorian health tonic advertising card collector. This card is a fold down card in the tradition of 'turn your frown upside down' Victorian advertisement cards. On the front is a man who looks sad, sick and is frowning. Open it and he's magically transformed to smiling, happy and youthful. All from the bottle of Hall's 'Balsam for the Lungs' he proudly holds in his hand! If it was only that easy. A fantastic study in false advertising during the Victorian era. Condition: The card is more golden in color than bright yellow. Wear on the corners, and at the fold lines. Some discoloration. No odor. Small age related marks. Where did it come from? Family owned piece. I have an old family box of trading cards, business cards, and calling cards. I've decided to sell a few. More to come! (Also more to come from an estate find.) There is a family story about the box of scraps and trading cards. Over 100 years ago, my great grandfather was going around the old house in rural Pennsylvania, gathering items he could burn in the fireplace during a particularly cold winter. As a child, my great grandmother grabbed the box and saved the cards from going up in flames! And by the way, my great grandmother lived to be 103! Thank you for shopping with Lizzie James!
