Here is an Original 1880s Japanese Kusakabe Kimbei Photo Lot 47 Photos in Accordion Fold Souvenir Album. This neat lot of 47 K. Kimbei antique photos from around the 1880's (give or take), all mounted in a very unique “accordion fold” souvenir album with real wood covers. Photos are mounted on both sides of the pages. One side of the book has historical photos of Yokohama and other areas of Japan with a description typed below each picture. The other side of the book is photos about a volcanic eruption and subsequent earthquakes and landslides with handwritten notes below some of the pictures. There is water staining, fading, edge yellowing, and discoloration as can be seen in the photos. Very unique book, never seen anything like it. None of the photos are colored. The stamp is faded inside the cover but you can see enough to know that it is the K. Kimbei stamp. Some of these photos may have been from Beato, but Kimbei had the right to use them. Message me and I can send pictures of all 47 photos for you to see. Regarding the writing on the covers I have had the following input: It is Chinese calligraphy. It appears that this may be someone perhaps practicing calligraphy. The character for “money” is repeated several times and the phrase “winter is warmer” is written once. My guess is someone may have been practicing the phrase “winter is warmer with money” but that is just a guess. Also the calligraphy is reversed/mirror image - so it appears it was written on paper, then the paper was pasted onto the board calligraphy side down - over time the characters showed through the backside of the paper appearing reversed or mirror image.
