With touching provenance, to the half title is the author's presentation inscription to a relation, reading: 'To Capt. G. M. Leycester with the author's affectionate love, 23rd July 1878'.Better known as Father Ignatius of Jesus, Joseph Leycester Lyne was an Anglican Benedictine monk remembered for commencing a movement to reintroduce monasticism into the Church of England.Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece of the mother in question, Lyne begins by explaining 'this book is the production of an afflicted widower, and addressed to one of his bereaved children; for he finds a mournful satisfaction in describing the virtues which adorned the mother'. CONDITION In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping and loss of cloth to back strip head and tail. Further horizontal splits in cloth of back strip. Rear joint starting, with board holding firm. Front hinge starting, with board holding firm. Internally, binding tender to centre of text block. Author's inscription to half title. Spot to title page, with pages otherwise generally clean and bright, with the odd notation.
