Item 483554-8 ◊ 1876 One Leaf From the Historical Register, Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia, PA Unique and fascinating "1876 One Leaf From the Historical Register, Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia, PA.-pages 53-54." The original newspaper was published by Frank Leslie, 1876, New York. It measures approximately 16" x 11-1/2" (≈40.5 cm. X 29 cm.)Offered here is one leaf (pages 53-54) of this "Historical Register Newspaper. (Unfortunately we do not have the whole Register, but we will be offering several pages of it over the next few weeks. This register was crammed full with some of the most large and beautiful illustrations you've ever seen. This was something Frank Leslie's organization was known for. Page 53 is an incredible, full page illustration, showing a large group of the workmen busily dragging a heavy stone planter at the Horticultural Hall. The sub-title explains that the plant is a large specimen of the "Phoenix Sylvestrus" … the East Indian Wild Date Palm. Every page of this register took the opportunity to show the world how Philadelphia and the USA was preparing for this huge centennial celebration. The men and women had to work hard, because they did not have the type of conveyances we have now days to move heavy objects. On this page there is also a brief history of the brewing of beer in early USA. Apparently William Penn was quite the brewer. On Page 54 we see two smaller illustrations. Here at the top of the page we have an illustration of the Headquarters of the Pennsylvania State Commission. And at the bottom a general illustration of visitors to the Exposition. It is on this page that we find information about the "Manufacture of Wine in the USA. Apparently wild grapes were very abundant in the "New World." The Vikings mentioned finding them in their explorations, and even named a portion of the continent "Vineland." But France sent over cuttings and plants for the purpose of wine production. William Penn didn't limit himself to beer, but also set aside a portion of his estate for the growing of wine grapes. And although he hired a French vintner, it turned out the Pennsylvania wasn't much suitable for growing wine grapes. However Georgia and the southern state have much better success, and even produce wine today.Cloth Production in the New World contributed greatly to the history of the new Country. Clothing the citizenry was obviously very important, and we could not depend on imports from France and England forever. Therefore the early governments in the New England states gave monetary support to the development of this industry as far back as 1640. And of course cotton was grown in the south. And in addition woolen goods were in great demand. The Exposition gave every country a chance to show the world their most advanced technology and their brightest and newest products. At the bottom of page 59 you can see the Judges' Pavilion. It was every exhibitor's hope to return home with a medal. It wasn't just something that was prestigious. Winning a medal gave them bragging rights … especially in their advertising. The 1876 Centennial Exhibition was the first great gathering of machine tool builders and assembly equipment vendors in the United States. It featured more than 30,000 exhibitors spread out in 190 buildings on a 256-acre site. Almost 10 million visitors (the U.S. population at the time was only 46 million) from around the world attendedWe all know that there was an industrial revolution going on at the time of this Exposition. And in the USA research was taking place in every field. Historians claim the Philadelphia fair transformed the global image of the United States. Before 1876, Europe had generally viewed the United States as an upstart country.Mass-produced products on display included sewing machines, typewriters, stoves, lanterns and guns, plus horse-drawn wagons, carriages and agricultural equipment. Powerful dynamos, pumps and turbines also attracted oohs and aahs from the throngs of visitors. One of the highlights of the fair was the first public showing of the arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty (the rest of the giant statue would not be completed in New York Harbor until 1886).It featured the debut of the world's first monorail system, Alexander Graham Bell's, telephone, and Thomas Edison's telegraph system. The people who attended went home with hundreds of new ideas for new products and for making their factories run more efficiently. Although the practical use of electricity had yet happened, Air compressors and air-powered tools were another new technology. This outstanding two page leaf is in very good condition, and is very clean. However there is minor wear to the edges and corners.
