Indexed by Subject and by First Line. Antique 19th century Christian hymnal with songs for Sunday School and Home singing. This hymnal, almost 150 years old, is pretty scarce. Includes " Nearer Home " by Phoebe Cary ( 1824 - 1871 ) [ see the photos ]. The songs are grouped by topic : Worship The Heavenly father Songs of Devotion Songs of Action Jesus Christ Lessons from Nature Songs of Home Songs of Heaven Missionary Songs Patriotic Songs Songs of Times and Seasons ( Easter , Christmas Carols , Temperance Meeting , Washington's Birthday , etc. ) Miscellaneous Songs Chants -------------- Condition. Worn binding. The covers remain attached, and the spine cloth, though worn, is still intact. ( see the photos ) The inner hinges have been carefully strengthened with a little Bookbinder's glue, and are secure. No markings. Original owner's name on the Preface page : " Etta Barlow " No other writing. A little foxing ( minor ). The pages are otherwise in very good condition. Carefully packed for shipment to the buyer. -------------- Biographical information : Author Charles William Wendte ( 1844 -1931) was a Unitarian minister, a writer, an author and editor of religious hymns, an advocate for woman suffrage, and a national spokesman for religious liberalism. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he graduated from Meadville Theological School in 1867 and Harvard Divinity School in 1869. He was ordained as a Unitarian minister and served churches in Chicago; Cincinnati, Ohio ; Newport , Rhode Island ; Oakland, California ; and Los Angeles. In the early 1900s he returned to Massachusetts and worked in several churches in metropolitan Boston. He retired to Berkeley, California by 1926. On June 22, 1880, he offered the opening invocation at the 1880 Democratic National Convention, calling the United States "an asylum and a refuge for the distressed and downtrodden throughout the world," and praying that "all sectional divisions and differences may cease forever among us." Author Henry Southwick Perkins ( 1833-1914) authored over 30 Christian hymns , and wrote many hymnals and other song books. Born in Stockbridge, Vermont , he received his first musical training from his father, and attended some of the best literary schools in his youth. His formal music education began in 1857, when he entered the Boston Music School, where he graduated in 1861. Perkins conducted music festivals and conventions throughout America, from Maine to California, and taught in "normal" music schools in New York , Ohio , Indiana , Wisconsin , Iowa , Colorado , Kansas, and Texas . He also served as Professor of Music at the University of Iowa (1867–69); principal of the Iowa Academy of Music, Iowa City, for five years; and principal at the Kansas Normal Music School for five consecutive summers. He composed vocal music for choirs, Sunday schools, public schools, choral societies, conventions and festivals. He organized the Illinois Music Teachers’ Association in 1886, and served as its president for 10 years. He settled in Chicago, Illinois, in 1872. In 1891, he established the Chicago National College of Music. He died on January 20, 1914, at Chicago , and was buried at Graceland Cemetery , Chicago, Illinois.
