Description: An interesting collection of 1875-76 receipts given to the Boston, Clinton & Fitchburg Railroad from 4 businesses in Walpole, Massachusetts for the transportation of bulk goods. Seeing these together provides some insight on the paperwork railroads needed and the surprisingly large market available to small towns. It's not surprising to see shipments going to towns in Massachusetts and New York. You would think the cities of Boston and New York City would provide enough business but then one is shipping all the way to Chicago. Raises an interesting question to explore about what additional paperwork was needed to ensure this shipment could easily pass through many other "hubs", railroad or maybe via boats to get to Chicago? You'll also notice 3 of the receipts look similar but each has variations which means each business had to purchase their own receipts. So, these were not provided by the Railroad Co. The oldest one (June 3, 1876) was printed by a different company. The one on June 21, 1875, looks like one business ran out of receipts and had to borrow one. These provide some neat physical evidence on the history of transportation logistics for US railroad companies and raw material businesses. The condition is good for 140+ year flimsy paper material. The issues are visually obvious. They are a little flaky but not going to fall apart from simple handling. Just exercise some caution and keep protected. I will ship these with care as well. Each are approx. 8-1/2" x 4-1/2"
